Vision:
The Department of Political Science aims to equip students with in-depth knowledge and intellectual tools to engage with global and India-specific issues and challenges in politics, political processes, and political ideas. It seeks to provide learning experiences and theoretical skills that prepare students to understand socio-political phenomena in all their dimensions, in a comparative and context-sensitive manner. To fulfill this goal, it has designed various programs and courses that balance specializations with interdisciplinary approaches. Through different pedagogical methods, the Department seeks to enhance students’ subject-specific knowledge along with their ability to think critically.
Mission:
To prepare adequately competent students who understand and apply concepts, theories, and methodologies from different subfields of Political Science to make sense of the world around them.
To familiarize students with the latest developments in the discipline and enable them to acquire substantive knowledge of institutions and processes of government that shape politics within and among nations.
To help students relate classroom instruction to political processes outside the class and contribute to knowledge-building through a commitment to equity, inclusiveness, diversity, and concern for the environment.
Goals:
Teaching, Research, and Extension Programs*: To undertake teaching, research, and extension programs in major branches of Political Science.
Training*: To impart training to students to equip them with academic and professional capabilities and to develop their analytical perspectives.
Encouraging Research*: To encourage research in social and political issues and contribute to the discipline of Political Science.
Extension Activities*: To undertake extension activities to create a free, just, and humane society.
History of the Department:
Balasaheb Desai College Patan was established in June 1969 with the mission to impart higher education to youth residing in Patan Tehsil. The college caters to the educational needs of this backward rural, earthquake-prone, hilly area of Maharashtra.
- In 1969-70, the Arts department was started.
- In 1971-72, B.A. Part I and B.A. II classes began.
- As a full-fledged department, it came into existence in June 1992-93.
- M.A. I and M.A. II classes were started in the year 2017-18.
The Department has well-qualified teaching faculty, including 01 NET, 01 SET, and 01 Ph.D. teachers. The Department conducts various activities like guest lectures, presentations, quizzes, visits, study tours, seminars, and projects. The Department has adopted a structured approach to teaching, enhancing education quality, and expanding its offerings with dedicated faculty and resources.
